Recent Study Explores Benefits of Dissolvable Plugs

In a recent study conducted in the Midland Basin, dissolvable and composite frac plugs were evaluated for their performance during hydraulic fracturing operations. Dissolvable plugs equipped with larger sealing elements emerged as a standout, delivering impressive isolation performance that closely matched the reliability of composite plugs while offering notable advantages in operational efficiency.

The study found that dissolvable plugs with larger sealing elements, such as Nine’s Stinger Dissolvable Frac Plug, provide better isolation and lower leakage rates compared to those with smaller sealing elements. In addition to improved performance, dissolvable plugs offer operational advantages, including reduced drill-out times. By the time of cleanout, dissolvable plugs are typically fully dissolved or dissolved to a point that minimizes the need for mechanical removal. This translates into reduced operational times and cost savings, particularly in low bottom-hole pressure regions where circulating composite plug cuttings to surface can be challenging.  Boosting the benefits of dissolvable plugs.

Additionally, dissolvable plugs reduce risks during wireline operations by eliminating the possible need to drill out a composite plug due to preset. This simplifies operations and can lead to time savings making them an ideal choice in high-pressure environments where reducing risks and costs is crucial.

While composite plugs have long been trusted for their reliability, plugs like the Stinger offer a significant advantage when factoring in the reduced risk during wireline and drill out operations. For operators seeking reliable isolation combined with reduced drillout times and streamlined operations, dissolvable plugs offer a cost-effective and efficient solution for completions.
